What is the High School Equivilency Diploma
Sometimes people are unable to complete high school. They may have had an illness, or even a family problem. It just might not have been the right time for them to attend high school. If you were not able to complete high school for whatever reason, a High School Equivalency Diploma might be for you.
The High School Equivalency Diploma is a diploma that is awarded after a student passes an exam that consists of five different parts: Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts-reading and Language Arts-writing. The test is taken online.
The difference between a High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) and a GED is that the HSED is typically taken after correspondence or distance learning courses in high school subjects are taken. Most of the time, these classes are taken through the same school that offers the diploma. This means that instead of having to study for the exam alone or through test prep classes, as is the case with the GED, the HSED actually requires the student to take classes and learn the knowledge instead of cramming for an exam and then forgetting the knowledge latter.
There are typically two options to completing the HSED. One is to take the exam immediately. The other is to actually take HSED correspondence courses. These courses are delivered via the internet, but are set up much like the semester system in high school. There are core subjects, as well as electives offered. The exam is the end result of the courses, which while they don’t take as long as traditional high school, can still take up to two years.
This second option is great for people who want more of the high school experience. Studying is easier because it encompasses more information than studying alone can. Also, if a student plans on using their high school degree as a stepping stone to attend college, the correspondence classes are a good way to explore what subjects interest them the most and this may help them to decide what they will study in college or trade school.
The HSED exam and the correspondence courses are offered through many different vendors. Most of these vendors on online schools or virtual schools. They are not free options, but the benefits of taking these classes or the exam online far outweigh the cost of the classes or exams.
There are many routes that an adult student can take to earn their high school diploma. They can earn their GED, they can take the HSED exam, or they can earn their HSED through correspondence classes. No matter what the student chooses to do, it is an important investment in their life and future. A high school diploma can offer many opportunities that most people even realize. Besides the potential to earn more money, having a high school diploma can boost self esteem, improve one’s quality of life, and even improve the relationships around them. These are benefits that people often take for granted if they already have a degree, but are fully realized for those students who had to struggle to get one.
