What does the GED Test Measure?
The GED test is an opportunity for adults who dropped out of school the opportunity to earn a credential equivalent to the high school diploma. There are several things the test measures in order to demonstrate the major skills of the twelfth grade competencies in five different subjects. These subjects include language arts (reading and writing), mathematics, science, and social studies.
The GED test is comprised of many different tests. There is a time limit for each test and the total amount of time you will spend on the test is 5 hours and 55 minutes. The language arts section is just over 3 hours, social studies is 70 minutes, science is 70 minutes, and the mathematics will take approximately 90 minutes.
The mathematics test has a time limit of 90 minutes. The person taking the exam may complete the exam before the time limit is completed. If the student does not complete the test by the end of the time frame then their scores will be calculated as such. The mathematics section is split in two parts. Part I allows a calculator for the exam but you must use the calculator provided by the testing site, which is a Casio fx solar powered calculator. Part II of the math test does not allow you to use a calculator. This section measures problem solving skills in algebra, geometry, statistics, data, and probability.
The science test section of the GED test is just over an hour to complete. This test will measure a student’s ability to comprehend the information in areas of life sciences, physical sciences, and space and earth sciences.
Language arts are split into two sections, reading and writing. The writing section is then split into two sections and the reading remains one. This means there are three different tests to measure the language arts skills of the student. The writing language arts Part I exam is 75 minutes. This test is multiple choice and it will measure a person’s ability to correct and edit problems with sentences that have errors in the structure, usage, organization, and mechanics. Part II of the test in writing won’t take as long. This section requires the student to respond to an essay question presenting an issue.
The social studies section will take the tester just over an hour to complete. The test will measure the ability to comprehend and use specific information including economics, history, civics, government, geography, and world history. The test will measure the tester’s ability to use concepts and information to solve and answer problems.
The GED test will measure the four major subjects of knowledge required by students in order to obtain a diploma in high school. These subjects include math, social studies, science, and language arts. Language arts is the largest portion of the test because it is the most important section a student needs to know to make it as an adult in the real world. The other sections will test skills like reasoning, probability, theory, and common sense.
