The Differences between the High School Diploma and Passing the GED Test
The Differences between the High School Diploma and Passing the GED Test
There are many similarities with the high school diploma and passing the GED test. However, there are also many differences. The differences with the GED test include the mentality, time, age, college acceptance, and more.
Overall, a passing score on the GED test is almost the equivalent of a high school diploma. Many businesses will consider a GED to be the same when hiring an employee and most colleges will consider it acceptable. However, the GED is viewed very differently and the mentality about the GED is low. Many people view the GED as a bad thing and have negative feelings for it. If you are competing with someone for a spot in something and your qualifications are a GED and the other person has a high school diploma, it could decrease your chances.
Obtaining a high school diploma takes three to four years in high school. There are some community colleges that offer high school credits and will help students complete their high school diploma. However, the most common method of obtaining a diploma is through an accredited high school. Most students take classes at a high school for four years. The GED test only takes six to seven hours to pass. There are many places you can take the GED test without any requirements. Some schools are starting to require preparation classes before they will allow you to take the GED test. These requirements may take an entire year to complete for a student. The GED takes much less time, dedication, and responsibility than the high school diploma.
People can take the GED test at the age of 16. If they pass the GED test then they can consider themselves with the equivalent of a high school diploma. A student cannot take a test at 16 to obtain their high school diploma. Most students complete their high school education at the age of 18. There are some students who finish their high school credits by the age of 16 or 17 but it is not common.
Another major difference between a high school diploma and passing the GED test is the way colleges look at them. About 95% of the colleges and universities out there accept a GED for entrance into the school. The other 5% of schools will not accept a student with a GED. However, of the 95% of schools that will accept the GED, many of these schools may require you to take special tests for acceptance if you have your GED. Those people who apply with a diploma are not required to take entrance exams.
There are many differences between the high school diploma and the GED. Many places will consider the two to be equivalent while other people will regard the GED to a much lower standard. Although, the GED may be at a lower standard it does meet the legal requirements of a high school diploma education in many instances. You might consider the differences if you are thinking about dropping out of school.
