GED vs High School Diploma
GED vs. High School Diploma
People like to make many different claims about how a high school diploma is better than a GED. There are advantages and disadvantages to both in most cases.
People say that employers respect those who have a high school diploma more than those with a GED and will even hire them over those with GEDs even if their qualifications are similar. This is not always the case in fact it is probably hardly ever the case. The argument made by some is that employers find people with a high school diploma as better candidates for jobs because they respect them as workers who will get things done right the first time around and that they are generally smarter. Really however people with GEDs get just as much if not more respect from employers. Employers realize even though a person may have made the wrong choice during their teenage years and hindered their chances at getting a high school diploma the fact that the person went back and got a GED shows that they have changed. They have realized what is important and have proved they realized it by putting in the work to get their GED. In this respect it really all comes down to the employers personal preference since there is no clear cut way to determine from the start that a certain person is worse than another at a job without being unfair. If there was employers would probably be amazed to see that there is little to no difference in the end between those with high school diplomas and those with GEDs.
In terms of higher level learning such as colleges or trade schools there is really not much of a difference in this area either in fact people with GEDs may have a bit of an edge over those without. They have already learned what happens when you do not do well in school and make the wrong choices so they know what they have to do to stay on top of their schooling and are more anxious to do it. Those with high school diplomas however are more vulnerable because they can still be easily swayed into making bad decisions. They are not as weary of things because they have not experienced what it feels like to not succeed in school thus they take it for granted which could result in them making bad decisions. Colleges themselves show no real favoritism to those with GEDs or those with high school diplomas when it comes to admissions.
While the reasoning and claims may never end between which is better since there will always be people who think one thing over another. In the end I truly believe there is little to no difference between the two, one does not hold a greater title over the other, in the end they are little more than the exact same thing with different names and that is the way the government intended for them to be. It is a second shot at getting a high school diploma. It is just there are those who think differently and thus the two have been separated as different entities when they really are not that different.
