For students taking the GED or High School Diploma Equivalency Exam, trying to cram everything that is typically learned in four years in traditional high school, into a few months or even weeks can be overwhelming. Some adult students have a few years of high school under their belts, while others did not even get a chance to attend at all. This can mean that, in many cases, adult students have to teach themselves.
The Science and Social Studies portions of the exams are often the most overlooked portions of the GED/HSED. These subjects include portions from US History, Civics, Economics, World History, Earth Science, Life Science and Physical Science. Most test takers are so worried about the writing and math portions that they tend to forget about the Science and Social Studies aspects of the GED/HSED.
Purchasing test prep books are great ways to study for the GED or HSED. Although many GED test study books cover all topics, they will have sections devoted to science and social studies. These books will include tips as well as sample questions to help prepare test takers for the exam questions. There will also be reviews on all the different science and social studies subjects in these books as well as practice tests with answers. Taking practice tests help test takers become more comfortable with the format before they take the actually test.
Another great way to prepare for the GED or HSED is to take a prep class. These classes go over subject matter that is similar to the books; however test takers are able to apply it easier. They can be taken in person at many community colleges and universities, but they can also be taken online at a variety of places including virtual schools and even the Educational Testing Center. There are also many resources to brush on skills both online and in person. Test takers may consider hiring a tutor that can help them with the social studies and science sections of the GED/HSED, perhaps a social studies or science teacher or professor. Some community learning centers offer free classes that can help students brush up on these subjects for the GED/HSED tests.
When preparing for any test, it is important to study what you feel will give you the most problems first. Math is something that seems to give many people problems, so test takers should study math first, then focus on other aspects of the GED/HSED as they feel comfortable with the math portion. Remember not to sign up for the GED/HSED until you are completely ready to take it. These tests can take a while to prepare for and there is nothing worse than feeling rushed and not doing as well because you were unprepared. Also, seek help wherever you can. Sometimes all it takes is a helping hand to help a test taker prepare. It is very surprising where test takers can find resources to help them on their quest to pass the GED/HSED, but you never know until you try. The results may surprise you, and will definitely help test takers on their way to improving their lives.
