Economic Impact of the GED Test
Economic Impact of the GED Test
The GED test can make a big impact on the economy and society. The impacts can be positive and negative.
The biggest negative impact of the GED tests is that students who see the benefits of the GED are encouraged to drop out of high school. They don’t understand that a high school diploma is better than a GED. When students see the benefits obtaining a GED by studying on their own time then they are more apt to drop out of school. Students might want to go to work right away to help their family or they just might not like spending their days at school. Going to high school teaches discipline and responsibility in a structured setting that students should get used to before they have to make it on their own in society.
High schools offer skills in school that a person cannot obtain through studying for a GED. Some of these skills include learning how to type, use a computer, and more. Students can learn how to cook, learn accounting skills, and learn how to do many things they will use as adults in society. If a high school education was not important then the requirement for an education would be that everyone studied to pass the GED.
There are not any actual economic benefits that appear immediately from obtaining a GED. When a person obtains a GED the economic benefits take time. For instance, if a person passes the GED to further their education then they need to complete their postsecondary educational goals before the results are obvious. The economy doesn’t see many benefits of people with their GED immediately also. A GED will allow people to enter into entry-level positions until they have furthered their education or been in the position for years.
GED test takers can have the benefit of furthering their education. This impacts the economy by many ways. There are many people every year who continue onto a postsecondary educational program after obtaining their GED. The economic benefits of continuing your education as a high school graduate or with a GED are the same for both.
Another point about the GED is that people who left school with weak skills will notice the biggest benefits of the GED and large economic gains when they obtain their GED. People who drop out of school who already have very strong skills don’t notice a big economic gain or any benefits when obtaining their GED. This is because a person with strong skills may already be in an employment position that someone with weak or no skills is trying to obtain by getting their GED.
The GED exam is important for people who have dropped out of school. The impact of the GED is not the same for all people. You must get your GED if you want to further your education or further your position in work. However, some people have strong enough skills that they do not need to get their GED because they own their own business or something else that doesn’t require an education.
